He urged the UN to take all necessary measures to uphold the ceasefire in a way that ensures the full implementation of the Sharm El-Sheikh Agreement, guarantees the safe, effective, and sufficient delivery of humanitarian aid to all areas of the Gaza Strip, rejects any attempt to create demographic or territorial changes in Gaza, prevents displacement, ends the occupation, and opens the path toward a just peace based on the two-state solution.

In a statement issued on the occasion of the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People, which falls today (Saturday), Dr. Abu Holi called on the United Nations and the Security Council to support the full membership of the State of Palestine in the United Nations, and to take effective measures to implement Security Council Resolution 2803 issued last November.

He stressed the need for the collective efforts of all states and parties committed to the two-state solution to translate the commitments contained in the Security Council resolution and the New York Declaration into concrete reality, and to hold the occupying state accountable for the crimes it has committed against the Palestinian people.

Dr. Abu Holi reiterated that any supervision or international presence in the Gaza Strip must have as its primary mission the protection of Palestinian civilians, and must be carried out with the approval of the State of Palestine — the legitimate authority over all Palestinian territories — and in support of its efforts to exercise sovereignty and manage the affairs of its citizens, not as a substitute for it or a cover for any separatist reality. He emphasized the unity of Palestinian land and the need to preserve its territorial integrity.

He said: “Today marks the 78th anniversary of the United Nations General Assembly Resolution 181, issued on November 29, 1947, which approved the partition of Palestine into an Arab state and a Jewish state. Through the struggle and sacrifices of our people and the justice of our cause, the United Nations designated, in 1979, the anniversary of Resolution 181 as the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People — a global indication of the international community’s recognition of the inalienable and legitimate rights of the Palestinian people.”

Abu Holi added that in 2012, on the same date, November 29, the Palestine Liberation Organization and the Palestinian people — under the leadership and determination of President Mahmoud Abbas — achieved a political and historic milestone by securing recognition of Palestine as a non-member observer state at the United Nations through the adoption of General Assembly Resolution 67/19 by an overwhelming majority. This reflected broad international support for the Palestinian people, their historical rights, and their just cause.

He emphasized the need to translate international recognition of Palestinian rights into concrete action by assuming responsibility for the Palestinian cause, ending the historical injustice imposed on the Palestinian people, and pressuring the Israeli occupying government to comply with international will and implement UN resolutions — especially Resolution 181, issued 78 years ago today, and Resolution 194, which affirms the right of refugees to return to their homes from which they were displaced in 1948, and which formed one of the conditions for Israel’s admission to the United Nations.

On the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People, Dr. Abu Holi urged the international community to support UNRWA politically and financially, protect its mandate, and maintain its essential services until the Palestinian refugee issue is resolved in accordance with Article 11 of UN Resolution 194.

He noted that Israel, the occupying power, is attempting to undermine UNRWA through discriminatory laws passed by the Israeli Knesset aimed at restricting its activities, gradually dismantling it, and transferring its responsibilities to international organizations as a prelude to liquidating the refugee issue. He stressed that Israel, as an occupying power, has no legal authority to end UNRWA’s mandate; only the United Nations holds that authority.

Abu Holi called on all free people around the world and all supporters of the Palestinian cause to take to the streets to express solidarity with the Palestinian people, support their legitimate rights, and raise their voices to demand an end to the Israeli occupation — the last remaining occupation in the modern era — and to condemn ongoing Israeli crimes against the Palestinian people. He urged immediate action to stop the war of extermination and starvation against the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip, which continues despite the announcement of a ceasefire and the issuance of Security Council Resolution 2803.
